Alleged Assault: Senator Abbo Gets N5m Bail

The FCT Police Command has arraigned Senator Elisha Abbo (PDP, Adamawa North) before a Chief Magistrate Court in Zuba for allegedly assaulting a woman in a sex toy shop in Abuja.

The video of the senator assaulting the woman at the sex toy had led to widespread outrage.

The police prosecution counsel, James Idachaba told the court that the matter was reported by one Mrs Warmate Osimibibra of plot 426 Adebayo Adodeji Street Utako, at the Maitama Police Station Abuja on May 14.

Idachaba, who is the Officer in Charge of the Legal Department of the FCT Police Command, said the matter was later transferred to Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department FCT Police Command for discreet investigation.

He alleged the senator committed the offence on May 11 at a shop located at Bannex Plaza, Wuse II Abuja.

The prosecutor also alleged that Abbo used criminal force and assaulted the complainant by slapping her severally on her face and forcefully dragging her shirt without provocation.

Idachaba said the offence contravened the provisions of Sections 262 and 263 of the Penal Code.

The senator, who had tendered a televised apology for the incident, however pleaded not guilty to the two-count charge.

Following his plea and an oral bail application by his counsel, Adegbite Adeniyi, the court, presided over by Senior Magistrate Abdullahi Ilellah, admitted him to bail in the sum of N5m.

The court also ordered him to present two competent sureties. The sureties, according to the court, must have verifiable addresses within the Federal Capital Territory.

The case was thereafter adjourned to July 22 for hearing.
